Lab orders & results

NextHealth Care

Included in Care Clinics Pro and Care Hospitals, and an add-on for Care Clinics

Every order handed between departments is a chance for it to be lost or delayed. NextHealth Care keeps the order, the specimen and the result together from the moment the doctor asks for a test. Panels and single tests are found by name, priority and performing lab are set in one step, specimens are barcode checked so a wrong sample is caught at the bench, and results return flagged against reference ranges straight into the doctor's view.

What it covers

  • Computerised order entry with order sets and favourites
  • Duplicate order warning and clinical decision prompts
  • Order status tracking through collection, processing and reporting
  • Critical result flagging with acknowledged-by and time-to-acknowledge
  • Result trending across visits and facilities
Why it is hard to do well

A result is only useful when it reaches the doctor

Lab orders and results in one connected workflow

A doctor suspects an infection and orders a full blood count and CRP during the consultation. The nurse sees the order immediately and collects both samples. In the lab, each tube is scanned against the order before it is processed, and a label that does not match is refused on the spot. Results appear in the doctor's workspace, marked against their normal ranges, without a phone call.

Doctors order from the consultation in a few clicks, with panels, priority and the performing lab chosen in one place, including another branch in the group. Every step, from collection to receipt and result, records who did it and when, so the status of any order can be answered instantly.

Abnormal values are flagged as soon as they are entered and critical results are marked for the ordering clinician, so urgent findings are not left waiting in a queue. Because results stay attached to the order and the visit, trends across visits are easy to follow and repeat testing is easier to avoid.

How lab ordering works in NextHealth Care

Computerised physician order entry (CPOE) lets clinicians order tests electronically instead of on paper. In NextHealth Care, lab orders flow from the consultation to the laboratory information system and back again, with every specimen tracked along the way.

  1. Order. The doctor searches tests or panels, sets routine, urgent or STAT priority and the performing lab, and adds clinical notes.
  2. Collect. Nursing sees the order immediately and collects each specimen under its own barcode label.
  3. Receive. The lab accepts the order and scans each specimen against it; a mismatched label is refused.
  4. Result. Values are entered against reference ranges, with abnormal and critical results flagged automatically.
  5. Review. Results return to the doctor's workspace beside the original order, marked preliminary until verified.

Questions we get asked

Lab orders & results is included in Care Clinics Pro and Care Hospitals, and can be added to Care Clinics.

A few seconds for a common test or panel: search by name or code, choose the priority and place the order, without leaving the consultation.

Every specimen carries a barcode. When the lab receives it, the barcode is scanned against the order, and a label that does not match is refused before any work is done.

Yes. Results return to the patient's visit beside the original order, flagged against the reference range, with critical values marked for the ordering clinician.

Yes. Each order shows whether it is awaiting a sample, collected, received, in progress or resulted, with who completed each step and when.

Yes. The performing lab is chosen when the order is placed, including another facility in the group, and results still return to the same visit.
